Freddie Mercury, full name Farrokh Bulsara, a Parsi-Indian, was born in Zanzibar in 1946. Mercury founded the Queen band with Roger Taylor (drummer) and Brian May (guitarist). Later, the band was also joined by John Deacon.

When songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Are The Champions,” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” were released, the rock music revolution had just begun. All of these songs emphasized Mercury’s powerful, four-octave voice.

He was a well-known singer and pianist who gained notoriety for much more than simply an iconic vice and an unrivaled musical genius. Mercury passed away in 1991 and announced just one day before his passing that he had been diagnosed with AIDS.

Media Questioned Mercury’s Sexuality
When some magazines criticized Freddie Mercury’s sexuality, he had already been in the media spotlight for a while. However, it wasn’t until his November 23, 1991, declaration that he had been diagnosed with AIDS that the public caught glimpses of the man behind the character.

By this point, rumours about Mercury receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1986 were circulating. A few newspapers even published images of Mercury on occasions when he appeared significantly thinner and lighter. A day after making a public statement, on November 23, 1991, he passed away at age 45 from bronchopneumonia, an illness related to AIDS.

Although the announcement displeased Mercury’s fans, his death raised attention to AIDS and its prevention, and to this day, scientists are working hard to find a cure for the chronic ailment.
