The Beatles have been broken up since 1970. But that hasn’t stopped the greatest band of the 20th century from scoring a Grammy nomination in 2025. Now, almost 55 years later, the Fab Four have scored a nomination for Record of the Year with the newly-released single “Now And Then”.
Widely considered to be The Beatles’ very last song, “Now And Then” was released in late 2023. The song was originally written and recorded by John Lennon back in 1977 via a home demo. The song was unfinished and never completed by Lennon before his death in 1980. The track was originally considered for The Beatles’ retrospective project The Beatles Anthology in the late 1990s. However, due to production issues, the song was kept on the shelf for decades.
Just a few years ago, the song was completed by surviving Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Overdubs of George Harrison’s guitar tracks were used on the song from 1995. Harrison, respectively, died in 2001.
The final, Grammy Award-nominated song features lyrics added by McCartney. AI had a hand in the single, too. Machine-learning audio restoration tech was used (and commissioned by The Beatles: Get Back director Peter Jackson) to extract some of Lennon’s vocals from the original demo.
The song was released in November 2023. McCartney performed “Now And Then” last month for the first time during the Got Back Tour. The song will be up for the Record of the Year win at the 67th Grammy Awards in February 2025.
The Beatles’ History With Grammy Nominations and Wins
The Beatles first earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year back in 1965. The win went to their iconic hit “I Wanna Hold You Hand” from Meet the Beatles!
With the newest addition to their nomination list, The Beatles have gained a total of 25 Grammy Award nominations. If the Fab Four score the win next year, they will have earned a total of eight Grammy Award wins both during and after their career together.
In fact, if the band wins in the Record of the Year category, it will mark the first time they won in that category… ever. “I Wanna Hold You Hand”, “Hey Jude”, and “Let It Be” were all nominated for Record of the Year, but unfortunately never won the coveted award.
In addition to Grammy Award nominations and wins, the Fab Four have also received honors from the Recording Academy via lifetime achievement awards and Hall of Fame recognitions through the years.
