Freddie Mercury had initially purchased the home for £500,000.
A wealthy fan may just be able to live in the same house that Queen frontman Freddie Mercury lived in as his London home is now being sold.
The Associated Press reports that real estate company Knight Frank is selling the home for offers that are higher than $38 million or P2,115,859,000 based on current exchange rates. Garden Lodge, as the home is known, is a “neo-Gregorian brick home in the posh Kensington neighborhood”. The home was put up for sale last month.
Freddie Mercury’s purchase of the home in 1980 was mentioned in the book Mercury: An Intimate Biography of Freddie Mercury, with the singer reportedly paying more than £500,000 (P35,421,109 based on current exchange rates) in cash at the time.
Freddie Mercury also died in that house in 1991 due to AIDS-related pneumonia, with his friend Mary Austin living there ever since.
Mary Austin also facilitated the sale of more than 30,000 items from Garden Lodge last year. The items were auctioned off last September by Sotheby’s as the culminating activity of the auction house’s “Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own” exhibit.
According to the Associated Press, the auction raised $15.4 million or P857,818,500 based on current exchange rates. The gate to Garden Lodge was sold for $521,000 or P29,016,834 based on current exchange rates.
Freddie Mercury is just one of the many pop culture legends that command high prices at auctions. Early this month, Kerry Taylor Auctions announced that Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy outfit from the 1995 BBC adaptation of the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice would be auctioned and is estimated to raise anywhere between £7,000 to £10,000 or P496,750 to P709,608 based on current exchange rates.
